Science, Engineering, Math, Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) is designed to expose historically underrepresented youth, grades K to 12, to multiple hands-on activities related to the fields of science, engineering, mathematics, and aerospace professions. The ultimate goal is to increase the numbers of students in the identified populations who enroll in technology-related academic majors in college. Programmatically, SEMAA seeks to increase student performance, understanding and proficiency in mathematics and science-related courses and to increase participant's enrollment and success in college prep and science courses. A hands-on, inquiry-based, cooperative learning environment is used. SEMAA sessions are held Saturday mornings on the Metropolitan Campus in three 8-week sessions each year. Three week-long camps sessions are held each summer. While students are attending the classes, parents and guardians are invited to participate in the SEMAA Family Cafe,' which provides parent training sessions on subjects ranging from cultural diversity and preparing for college to parenting skills and community awareness.
